Elite cars, apartments in VIP residential complexes and Koncha-Zaspa: how former prime ministers of Ukraine live now

Ukraine has more than ten former prime ministers. The most recent of them, Denys Shmyhal, still works in the government, but now as Minister of Energy. Some former heads of government have long since withdrawn from politics, yet continue to lead a luxurious lifestyle – buying premium cars and real estate in expensive districts near Kyiv.

A new house in Koncha-Zaspa and a son with political experience

Ukraine’s first prime minister, Vitold Fokin, passed away last year. Out of respect, his property is not discussed here. He was succeeded by Valentyn Symonenko.

Symonenko served as acting prime minister in October 1992 under President Leonid Kravchuk. He also acted as the president’s representative in Odesa region and headed the Accounting Chamber. The politician has two sons.

Valentyn is now 85. He is listed as the owner of the “Alpclub” and several public organizations (“Ukrainian Forum”, “Odesa Mountaineering Club”). According to his declaration, he has no financial difficulties.

In October 2025 he officially became the owner of a 391 sq.m house in Koncha-Zaspa. The Kozinka River flows across the road. The value of such property can reach one million dollars (depending on renovations). In addition, Symonenko owns several houses in Odesa.

The former prime minister has two sons: Kostyantyn (52) and Serhiy (63). The elder son previously headed “Derzhhydrographia” and served as deputy minister of transport. Kostyantyn Symonenko is a lawyer and traveler who was the first Ukrainian to visit every UN member state (as noted on Wikipedia).

After Symonenko, Leonid Kuchma became prime minister (before his presidency). He led the government from October 1992 to September 1993. This period of his career is now rarely mentioned.

Kuchma is 87. His real estate is registered in Dnipropetrovsk region. At the same time, the wealth of the politician and his family is largely tied to family connections. His son-in-law Viktor Pinchuk is a well-known billionaire.

Former prime ministers Yefim Zvyahilskyi, Vitaliy Masol and Yevhen Marchuk have already passed away (as has Vitold Fokin). Pavlo Lazarenko (the fifth prime minister) has long been abroad and served a sentence in the United States.

A new apartment for a former prime minister

From June to July 1997 the duties of prime minister were performed by Vasyl Durdynets. After leaving government he headed Ukraine’s National Bureau of Investigations. Vasyl is now 88. In October 2025 a 69 sq.m apartment in the Park Avenue VIP residential complex (valued at around $170,000) was registered in his name.

From July 1997 Valeriy Pustovoytenko led the government for more than two years. A few days before the full-scale invasion he purchased a 2021 BMW M760LI. Today such a car costs from $50,000. The ex-prime minister is 79. His only registered property is located in Dnipro.

Several LLCs are registered to Viacheslav Pustovoytenko (54), the ex-prime minister’s son. In 2019 he became the owner of two apartments (81 and 66 sq.m) in the Chicago Central House residential complex. One square meter in this complex currently costs about $4,000 including renovations.

The politician’s younger son, 48-year-old Serhiy Pustovoytenko, is also involved in business.

Anatoliy Kinakh is the youngest among the mentioned prime ministers. He headed the government after Yushchenko, and his successor was Yanukovych. Kinakh probably shared the latter’s views – in 2008 he joined the Party of Regions. The 71-year-old politician now heads the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.

Among the former prime ministers there are also those who remain active in politics. In particular, Yuliya Tymoshenko. For many years her declarations have stated that she lives in a house in Kozyn that she rents.

Volodymyr Hroysman, who became prime minister in 2016, chose the path of a regional leader. His political and business capital remains closely tied to Vinnytsia region. There, the ex-prime minister’s family companies successfully operate in commercial real estate, allowing him to maintain his usual standard of living.

Overall, history shows that the status of prime minister has significantly declined in recent years. Whereas previously the head of government wielded considerable political influence and automatically became the main contender for the presidency, this role is now increasingly filled by officials who can hardly be called independent political players. The center of decision-making has finally shifted, turning the Cabinet into a purely executive body.
