Fraudsters on social networks are using the Ukrenergo logo to spread fake messages about severe power outages in order to increase the audience of their telegram channels. Reliable information about limiting electricity consumption can only be found on the official pages of the Ministry of Energy, NEC Ukrenergo, oblenergo and local authorities.
Ukrenergo reported this. “Subscribers to our Facebook page sent another screenshot with a fake ‘severe outage warning,’” the message says.
Fraudsters use familiar logos and the style of official messages to enhance the credibility of their publications. However, it is important to remember that Ukrenergo never publishes schedules of hourly power outages in the regions. One of the obvious markers of the fakeness of such messages is grammatical errors. For example, the fraudulent message said “power outage,” which is incorrect from the point of view of official terminology.
The purpose of such fraudulent actions is for scammers to increase the audience of their telegram channels. By publishing false messages about outages, scammers mislead users into subscribing to their channels in search of supposedly reliable information. This creates panic and confusion among the population, undermining trust in official sources.
To avoid becoming a victim of scammers, you should check information through official channels. Reliable information about measures to limit electricity consumption can be found on the social media pages of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, NEC Ukrenergo, your oblenergo and local authorities:
