Ukraine has officially ratified the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the corresponding law.

The Rome Statute is an international treaty that established the International Criminal Court. It sets out the rules of procedure for the court and the crimes that fall under its jurisdiction. These include the crime of aggression, the crime of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Ukraine’s ratification of the Rome Statute allows it to gain full membership in the ICC.
As is known, Ukraine ratified the Rome Statute with a statement under Article 124 of the Rome Statute, according to which the ICC will not have jurisdiction under Article 8 (war crimes) against Ukrainian citizens for seven years after ratification. It is also now possible to hold Russian criminals accountable.
Ratification of the Rome Statute was one of Ukraine’s obligations upon joining the EU.
