Scammers on Telegram increasingly use AI to enhance persuasiveness

Experts have developed an interactive test to detect fraudulent schemes.

The digital security hotline for Ukrainians, Nadiyno, studied methods of compromising Telegram accounts and highlighted the most common hacking methods. Among them are phishing attacks through fake messages from "support service", friends, or favorite channels, reports Mezha.

As part of the study, Nadiyno experts also determined that the use of artificial intelligence for personalizing attacks is increasing, making fraudulent messages even more convincing.

Phishing Telegram bots and alternative Telegram clients with hidden backdoors that transmit data to fraudsters are also gaining momentum. Nadiyno noted that another real threat, particularly for journalists, activists, and public figures, is the interception of SMS codes.

"Analysis of inquiries to the Nadiyno.org digital security hotline in 2024 reveals a worrying trend: every month, 70% to 80% of recorded cybersecurity incidents involve unauthorized access to Telegram accounts. This poses significant risks not only to individual users but also to national security as a whole," the document states.

The research was conducted to change this statistic. Based on it, Nadiyno created an interactive test on digital vigilance to teach Ukrainians how to recognize the most common fraudulent schemes.

The test recreates 10 real and potentially fraudulent dialogues in Telegram. Its goal is to distinguish a genuine message from a phishing trap. After each response, there is an expert analysis of the scheme.

Nadiyno is the first digital security hotline in Central and Eastern Europe for Ukrainian citizens. Its specialists provide free assistance to protect against account hacks, data leaks, espionage, fraud, and other malicious activities online.
