The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine failed to adopt an appeal to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the posthumous awarding of the title of Hero of Ukraine to the renowned linguist Iryna Farion. The decision did not receive the necessary number of votes.
A group of Members of Parliament submitted an appeal requesting that Iryna Farion be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with a posthumous order. However, the parliament was unable to support this decision.
During the initial vote for support, 199 Members of Parliament expressed their approval. But in the final vote regarding sending the request to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the number of votes decreased to 189.
The minimum required number of votes for the decision to pass is 226, therefore, the initiative was rejected.
Iryna Farion was a Ukrainian linguist, Doctor of Philology, known for her active stance on the protection of the Ukrainian language and national identity. For many years, she publicly opposed Russification and the spread of the Russian language in Ukraine.
