European officials, following Trump’s recent statements, began privately discussing the creation of a "continental-wide addition to NATO."

The Washington Post writes about this.

It could work in conjunction with US security guarantees, but could also serve as a “credible alternative” if US guarantees were withdrawn.

"For now, these conversations are bogged down in the usual disputes. France and Germany cannot agree on who will pay the bills. Eastern Europe does not fully trust Western Europe’s resolve to counter Russian threats. It is unclear how they will be able to create a nuclear shield over the continent - and even if they do, they will be no match for the Russian arsenal in the worst case of nuclear war,” writes WP.

According to the publication, after Trump’s statements, “Europe is concerned and outraged, but does not know what to do next.”
