The European Union believes that new trade measures will allow Ukraine to continue exporting its agricultural products to Europe, and farmers in the EU will receive protection from Ukrainian exporters.
Duties and quotas on the export of Ukrainian agricultural products to the countries of the European Union will not apply until June 5, 2025. The corresponding proposals were approved on March 7 by deputies of the Committee on International Trade of the European Parliament (EP), the press service of the European Union reports .
All restrictions on grain supplies from Ukraine will be lifted from June 6, 2024. At the same time, the European Commission (EC) will be able to impose restrictions on the import of poultry meat, eggs and sugar from Ukraine if the volume of imports of these goods exceeds the average supply volumes for 2022 and 2023. The restrictions imply that quotas will be established for the import of these products.
Parliament is expected to vote on the decision in the first reading at a plenary session next week. The European Council will then formally approve the regulation and it will enter into force upon publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
"The continuation of EU trade measures will ensure that Ukraine can continue to export its agricultural products to the EU, which are the most important lifeline for the Ukrainian economy. At the same time, the proposal includes strong guarantees to ensure that our farmers are not overburdened by a sudden increase in imports," it said in the message.
It is also expected that the European Commission will be given the right to set tariffs or introduce any other necessary measures if it turns out that the import of certain Ukrainian products threatens the stability of the EU market.
“This is a good balance between continuing our vital support to Ukraine and the necessary protection of our markets,” the press service noted.
