Ukrposhta sells forgotten parcels of Ukrainians

At the first auction for the sale of forgotten parcels, Ukposhta sold 4 pallets with them for 120 thousand UAH. At the same time, the starting price of each was 1.2 thousand UAH, that is, the initial cost of 4 pallets was 4.8 thousand UAH.

This was announced by the General Director of Ukrposhta Ihor Smilyanskyi.

He noted:

• each pallet contained 100 parcels;
• 56 participants attended the first auction.

“The winners paid 120 thousand hryvnia for 4 pallets of 100 parcels each. And this is at a starting price of 1200 per pallet or 4800 for 4,” the message says.

Ukrainians did not pick up thousands of parcels at Ukrposhta

At the same time, he noted that Ukrposhta has accumulated thousands of parcels that customers have not received for more than 6 months. The reasons for this, according to him, are different:

• “somewhere these are advertising packages”;
• someone’s circumstances suddenly changed, as a result of which people were unable to receive their shipment;
• “sometimes a return is more expensive than a refusal,” etc.

“We incurred costs for all these deliveries, which we now have the opportunity to compensate,” Smilyanskyi explained.

How to distinguish the sale of "Ukrposhta" from scammers

At the same time, he admitted that there is a possibility that scammers could sell some things, masquerading as Ukrposhta. To distinguish real auctions from fraudulent ones, according to him, is simple:

• "Ukrposhta" conducts its auctions exclusively on the Prozorro.Sales platform;
• the company does not sell individual parcels - only pallets.

Selling unnecessary parcels is a global practice

In general, Smilyanskyi noted, the sale of unnecessary parcels is not an invention of Ukrposhta. This is a worldwide practice, and the volume of the resale market for such parcels is $644 billion.

"The value of returned or uncollected e-commerce parcels in the world exceeded $220 billion in 2023, or about 16% of sales. Market leaders are starting to fight it. One way is to sell such goods so that they do not end up in the trash landfills. The volume of this resale business is $644 billion,” he concluded.
