The first group of convicts dismissed to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is already undergoing military training. It will last at least two months, so they will be sent to the front line before the end of summer.
Justice Minister Denys Malyuska spoke about this in an interview with the Financial Times .
Malyuska said that after the law was passed, about 2,872 prisoners were released out of 5,196 who requested it. 368 people were refused due to health reasons.
“There are many good people in the prison system who could be useful at the front. This is a good window of opportunity to start your life on a new page,” he noted.
The program is expected to bring in about 5,000 new recruits, a number that could triple under the best of circumstances.
