During the crossing of the Tysa, two men died: their "guides" face punishment

A tragedy occurred in Zakarpattia during an attempt to illegally transport men across the Tisza River to Romania. As a result of this incident, two people died.

The suspects involved in this scheme have already been arrested, and the organizers have been charged. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General and National Police.

According to the investigation, a group of individuals organized the illegal transportation of draft-age men across the border for money. During a series of operational and investigative measures, police officers determined that the scheme was organized by a 27-year-old resident of the Khust district and a 35-year-old co-organizer from Ivano-Frankivsk region. The perpetrators involved three executors — a 34-year-old resident of Tyachiv district and 28 and 29-year-old residents of Khust district.

The cost of such "services" ranged from 7,000 to 10,000 dollars per person.

However, one such attempt in April 2024 ended tragically: two men drowned while crossing the Tysa, and one of them is still missing. The bodies of the two deceased were found in the Tyachiv and Khust districts. Others managed to reach Romania.

The organizers of the crossing, aware of the danger of the swollen river in the spring, did not warn their clients and even assured them of the route’s safety. When the men began to drown, one of the suspects fled the scene without providing any assistance.

For this, five suspects were charged under Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — illegal transfer of persons across the border in a dangerous way. The court selected pre-trial detention with the possibility of posting bail totaling 35.4 million hryvnias.

For the committed crime, the perpetrators face a penalty of up to 9 years imprisonment. Additionally, during the investigation, the assets of the suspects were seized.
