In the temporarily occupied Sevastopol, a regional emergency situation has been declared due to a large-scale accident involving two tankers that occurred on December 15 in the Kerch Strait. The incident caused significant pollution of the waters and coastline of Crimea.
According to local sources, the fuel oil spill resulting from the oil products discharge has already reached the shoreline. The region’s ecosystem and marine inhabitants suffered due to the accident. There is observed mortality of fish, birds, and marine mammals.
On the occupied territories, efforts to contain the pollution are ongoing. However, due to the lack of sufficient resources and international support, the work to eliminate the consequences of the catastrophe is progressing slowly. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm, as the fuel oil spill poses long-term threats to the Black Sea ecosystem.
At the same time, the lack of transparent information from the occupying authorities complicates the assessment of the disaster’s scale. Ukrainian experts demand the admission of international environmental organizations to the region for proper monitoring of the situation and organization of assistance.
The consequences of this accident are expected to affect not only Crimea but also adjacent territories, causing significant environmental and economic damage.
