Strike on the historical center of Odesa: how many landmarks have been damaged

The historic center of Odesa, which suffered an attack by the Russians on January 31, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. At least 15 monuments were reported damaged as a result of the shelling.

This was reported by the mayor of Odesa, Hennadiy Trukhanov.

On January 31, the historic center of Odesa, included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, once again became the target of a missile attack. The Bristol Hotel building, one of the most prominent architectural landmarks in the city’s central part, suffered significant damage, the extent of which has yet to be determined.

Nearby historic buildings were also affected by the powerful blast wave. About 15 cultural heritage monuments sustained varying degrees of damage. The main damages included shattered window panes and displaced joinery.

The affected objects include:

In addition, significant damage was reported to the stained glass and authentic joinery of large windows with semi-circular endings in the buildings of the Union of Architects of Ukraine and the Porto-Franco Bank.

"The Philharmonic (New Exchange) is the most valuable from an architectural and social point of view among the damaged buildings. The blast wave knocked out the authentic joinery of the main entrance, damaged the stained glass, and the interior decoration of the premises. Experts will assess the impact of the attack on the condition of the main structures after additional inspection," added Trukhanov.
