On Monday, February 24, the foreign ministers of the European Union approved the 16th package of sanctions against Russia, the aggressor country, coinciding with the third anniversary of the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine.

This is reported by the website of the EU Council.

According to the text, the sanctions target 48 individuals and 35 legal entities responsible for actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.

Moreover, the EU sanctions covered 74 tankers from the shadow Russian fleet transporting Russian oil in circumvention of the bans.

The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, stated: “For three years now, Russia has been relentlessly attacking Ukraine, trying to seize land that does not belong to it.”

“This new round of sanctions targets not only the Russian shadow fleet but also those supporting the operation of dangerous oil tankers, video game controllers used to operate drones, banks involved in circumventing our sanctions, and propaganda channels spreading lies,” she said.

According to Kallas, each new sanctions package “deprives the Kremlin of resources for waging war.”

“In the context of negotiations to end Russian aggression, we must strengthen Ukraine in a position of power. Sanctions provide leverage,” she concluded.
