It is currently impossible to launch the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is now under Russian control, said IAEA head Rafael Grossi in an interview with Reuters.
According to him, the necessary conditions for launching the NPP are absent—specifically, there is a lack of water for cooling the reactors and unstable power supply. To resume the plant’s operation, it is necessary to pump water from the Dnipro River and conduct a thorough inspection of the equipment, which has not been used for more than three years.
Grossi emphasized that although the Russian side has the technical ability to launch the plant, the issue of certifying specialists is of a political nature. In addition, the IAEA faces difficulties in ensuring safe access to the plant through the Russian-controlled territory.
Thus, the launch of the Zaporizhzhya NPP is unlikely in the near future.
