London’s "Chelsea" may sue Ukrainian footballer Mykhaylo Mudryk over his doping scandal.
Sports lawyer Dan Chapman noted that the "Blues" have the right to initiate legal proceedings against the 24-year-old winger, who has recently been charged by the FA with violating anti-doping regulations.
"This is a very rare step, but it’s an option open to them. Chelsea will argue that they purchased Mudryk for 80 million pounds, he breached the contract, and now he is practically worthless."
According to the lawyer, such lawsuits rarely occur in football, as it may harm the clubs.
"Few clubs wish to act this way, as it shows future players that if they sign a contract but something goes wrong, they might end up being liable to the club. This typically doesn’t happen, but it can. Currently, there are signs that Chelsea fully supports their player, and who knows if this stance is justified," reports the lawyer’s words in The Athletic.
Recall that Chelsea had a similar situation. In 2004, London club player Adrian Mutu received a seven-month suspension for cocaine use. Subsequently, Chelsea sued the Romanian player for 17 million euros in compensation.
