Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day: the 29th anniversary of the adoption of the Basic Law

On Saturday, June 28, Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day, which was adopted 29 years ago. This public holiday is established on the occasion of the adoption of the Fundamental Law of Ukraine in 1996.

Usually, this day is a day off in Ukraine (or the day off is moved to Monday if Constitution Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday). However, due to martial law in Ukraine in 2025, there is no additional day off.

Constitution Day is a special public holiday because it is the only one enshrined in the Constitution itself. Article 161 of the Fundamental Law states: «The day of adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine is a public holiday — Constitution Day of Ukraine».

This year, the Ukrainian Constitution turns 29 years old. 315 deputies of the Verkhovna Rada voted for its adoption shortly after 09:00 on June 28, 1996. This was preceded by the famous constitutional night: the Rada worked on the final draft of the Constitution all day on June 27 and into the night of June 28.
