On July 23, the law on restricting the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) was published in the official publication of the Verkhovna Rada — the newspaper «Holos Ukrayiny».
This means that the document came into force on the day of its publication.
It should be reminded that the law provides for a change in jurisdiction for NABU and SAPO, effectively transferring some cases to other law enforcement agencies. Anti-corruption activists and some politicians called this an attack on the independence of the anti-corruption infrastructure, as well as an attempt to weaken the bodies that investigate corruption at the highest levels of power.
Moreover, the adoption and signing of the law provoked sharp criticism from the public, international partners, and a number of human rights organizations.
