President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he canceled the initiative to limit the powers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) following protests defending anti-corruption bodies.
He stated this during a meeting with journalists, reports Suspilne.
According to the president, he proposed a new bill that restores all previously provided powers to NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).
«It is very important what society says. I respect the opinion of the society. I believe that it is absolutely normal to react when people don’t want something, when people don’t like something. People said: everything should be according to the law. It was very important for me to hear and respond correctly. We have responded», stated Zelenskyy.
Recall that the adoption of the controversial law on the redistribution of powers of anti-corruption bodies sparked a wave of criticism and protests in Kyiv. Activists and human rights defenders stated that it could undermine the independence of NABU and SAPO.
