Zelenskyy announced the creation of Assault Forces

Assault forces will be created in Ukraine. This will be a separate branch within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the decision has already been made.

The corresponding statement was made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 20 during a conversation with journalists. He was quoted by the agency "Ukrinform".

The head of state explained that our assault units, such as battalions and regiments, have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield. 

"We have assault battalions and regiments that have shown undeniably good results in 2025. And we have decided that we need to move into the legal sphere... we will now create separate Assault Forces, the decision has been made," Zelenskyy said.

As of September 20, preparatory work was underway to move the initiative into the official sphere. The president expects that "somewhere around a week, ten days – and everything will be operational".

He also noted that in the composition of the Assault Forces, "there will definitely be a drone component".

Separate Assault Regiments (SAR) are already defending Ukraine

Currently, the separate assault regiments (SAR), created in 2025 on the initiative of Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky, are subordinate to the command of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

It is publicly known about five such formations:

• 1st Separate Assault Regiment;
• 33rd Separate Assault Regiment;
• 210th Separate Assault Regiment;
• 225th Separate Assault Regiment;
• 425th Separate Assault Regiment "Skala".
