The SSU detained Russian agents who were preparing a terrorist attack in the Dnipropetrovsk region

The counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine prevented new terrorist attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region. As a result of proactive measures, a Russian agent pair was detained in one of the cities of the industrial region. They were producing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on the enemy’s orders.

This was reported by the SSU.

"The perpetrators turned out to be a 27-year-old deserter from the Pokrovsk district of Donetsk region, recruited by the Russians, and his 34-year-old cohabitant.

After deserting his military unit, the deserter was hiding in her apartment in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Later, they began looking for ’easy money’ on Telegram channels, where they came to the attention of the occupiers.

After being recruited, the suspects received instructions from their handler to build a bomb capable of destroying a car.

According to the case materials, after making the explosive, the perpetrators were supposed to disguise it as a fire extinguisher, equip it with nuts to enhance its destructive effect, and then hide it at coordinates they were awaiting from their handler. Subsequently, Russian special services planned to detonate it using a call to a mobile phone embedded in the explosive device.

SBU officers uncovered the enemy’s intentions in advance and detained both agents while they were finishing assembling the IED in their own residence.

During the searches, components for the bomb and smartphones with evidence of their contacts with the occupiers were seized from the detainees.

SSU investigators informed the detainees of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 14 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (preparation for a terrorist act committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons).

The perpetrators are in custody. They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
