Zelenskyy: Russian attacks have disabled up to 10 GW of generating capacity in Ukraine
The series of recent Russian attacks on the energy system has disabled up to 10 GW of generating capacity in the power grid. Some facilities will not be able to be restored even before the start of the next heating season.
This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with Bloomberg.
According to him, Russian attacks have led to a daily electricity deficit, reaching 5-6 GW during peak load hours. Some facilities damaged by the occupiers’ terrorist attacks will not be restored before the next heating season.
Regarding the restoration of what Russia has destroyed, Zelenskyy urged not to let optimism about progress in peace talks overshadow the real funding challenges Ukraine faces.
Currently, the areas of reconstruction and support for military potential to deter any future Russian attack require significant funding. Without clear sources of financing, Ukraine could face an economic shock. Billions of dollars are needed for reconstruction, social expenditures, and army support in the coming years.
"This will require a clear funding mechanism with Europe’s involvement, as even potential funding from frozen Russian central bank assets will not cover long-term needs," the publication notes.
