Russian drone hits apartment building in Romania: people injured and dozens of residents evacuated

In the night of May 29 in Romania, namely in Galati, a powerful explosion occurred. It was preceded by an air alert announced due to another attack by Russian drones on Ukrainian territory. The explosion happened after a combat UAV fell on the roof of an apartment building. At this time, two injured people are known.

Romanian media report this, and the fact of the drone falling on a residential building was also confirmed by the Romanian Ministry of Defence. The OSINT community Exilenova+ collected videos that are actively spread by local users.

Everything indicates that it was a Russian drone that fell in Galati — the city is located near Odesa region, which was also attacked by Russian UAVs that night.

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, enemy drones were heading towards Odesa region, to Reni, which is only about 20 kilometers from Galati.

After the explosion on the 10th floor, a fire broke out, local residents say.

Romanian police and rescuers who arrived at the scene recorded two injured and evacuated about 70 people from the building.

Reaction of the Romanian Ministry of Defence

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence noted that on the night of May 29, Russia resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure facilities in Ukraine near the border with Romania.

“A drone detected by radar in the southern part of Galati entered Romanian airspace and fell on the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire. Specialists from IGSU, other units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the information service, and the police are working at the scene,” the agency’s statement reads.

The Ministry of Defence added that Romanian radars detected Russian UAVs near the country’s airspace. At 01:19, two F-16 fighters took off from the airbase in Fetesti, accompanied by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter.

“The crews had permission to engage targets. The National Military Command Center warned the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations about the need to alert the population. RO-Alert messages were sent to Tulcea, Galati, and Braila counties,” the Romanian Ministry of Defence noted and promised to update the information as it becomes available.
