In Bukovyna, a dog detected the smuggling of 175 packs of cigarettes hidden under meat and sweets in the suitcases of a Romanian citizen

In Bukovyna, a service dog helped uncover an attempt to illegally transport tobacco products across the state border.

The Chernivtsi District Court found a Romanian citizen guilty of concealing cigarettes during an attempt to leave Ukraine through the "Dyakivtsi" checkpoint.

The incident occurred on March 23, 2026. During customs control, the woman stated that she was only transporting personal items and food products, but the service dog reacted to her luggage. After a thorough inspection, customs officers found 175 packs of cigarettes hidden in suitcases among the products.

In particular, 140 packs were hidden under packaging with poultry meat, another 35 — among confectionery products. Some of the tobacco products did not have Ukrainian excise stamps or were marked for duty free.

The value of the seized goods amounted to more than 22 thousand hryvnias. The court found the woman guilty of violating customs rules and imposed a fine of 11,102 hryvnias with confiscation of the entire batch of cigarettes.
