A new banknote will appear in Ukraine. The highest denomination note of 2000 hryvnias featuring the image of the 1960s poet Vasyl Stus will be put into circulation.

This was announced by NBU Governor Andriy Pyshnyi during a press briefing.

Release date: The banknote will enter circulation on September 4, 2026.

Reasons for introducing the banknote: The share of 1,000-hryvnia notes in circulation has reached 55%, and the average salary has risen to 30,961 hryvnias.

Logistics optimization: The new denomination will significantly reduce the state’s and banks’ costs for transporting and storing cash.

Characteristics: The banknote features the image of the 1960s poet Vasyl Stus. The banknote will have over 20 modern anti-counterfeiting elements.

NBU Governor also noted that the new banknote will enter circulation on September 4 — the day of commemoration of Vasyl Stus.

Banknote security: The new note contains at least 20 modern security features that significantly increase its resistance to counterfeiting. At the same time, the Ukrainian hryvnia is already among the most secure currencies in the world, Pyshnyi emphasized.

The 2000-hryvnia banknote features Vasyl Stus — a prominent Ukrainian poet, translator, political prisoner, and dissident, one of the brightest representatives of the 1960s movement.

His portrait is placed on the front of the banknote, and to the right of the portrait is the signature “V. Stus”.
