Ex-prosecutor Karaputa received a suspended sentence for a bribe after paying 2.5 million hryvnias to the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The Desnyansky District Court of Chernihiv approved a plea agreement regarding the former prosecutor of the Koryukivka District Prosecutor’s Office of Chernihiv Region. Andriy Andriyovych Karaputa received a suspended sentence after paying a multi-million voluntary contribution for the needs of Ukrainian military units.

Essence of the charges: “discount” on a bribe and blackmail with suspicion

According to the case materials, in October 2025 the accused, while serving as a prosecutor, demanded an unlawful benefit from the head of the improvement department of the Snovsk City Council. The prosecutor demanded money for not bringing the official to liability in a case concerning the felling of trees in the protective strip of a road and for the subsequent closure of the proceedings by the investigator.

Initially, Karaputa valued his “services” at 3,000 US dollars, but later, during another meeting in the central square of Snovsk, he reduced the amount to 2,500 dollars. To demonstrate his influence and intimidate the official, the prosecutor showed him unfinished draft rulings on closing the case.

The money was handed over on 10 December 2025 near the administrative building of the Snovsk District Court, where the prosecutor was detained by law enforcement officers.

 Agreement with the prosecutor and 2.5 million for the Defence Forces

In April 2026, a plea agreement was concluded between the prosecutor of the General Inspectorate of the Office of the Prosecutor General and the accused. 

One of the key conditions of the agreement, in addition to the unconditional admission of guilt, was the accused’s obligation to transfer 2,500,000 hryvnias as a voluntary contribution to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine, units of the National Guard of Ukraine, and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

According to the court materials, during May–June 2026 the funds were fully paid in four equal installments (625,000 UAH each) to the special accounts of the respective military units.

Court decision and imposed punishment

The court qualified Karaputa’s actions under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (receiving an unlawful benefit by an official holding a responsible position, combined with extortion) and approved the plea agreement.

On 11 June 2026, Andriy Karaputa was sentenced as follows:

• 7 years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to hold positions in law enforcement agencies, the prosecutor’s office, and courts of all instances for a period of 3 years, without confiscation of property;
•   on the basis of Article 75 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, he was released from serving the main punishment on probation (a probationary period of 3 years was established).

The court also recovered from the convicted person procedural costs for engaging an expert in the amount of 13,959.44 UAH and lifted the previously imposed arrest on his property. Mobile phones and a flash drive seized during the detention were ordered to be returned to the owner, and the bribe amount itself ($2,500) — to the Security Service of Ukraine.
