President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged that Ukraine will not receive an invitation to join NATO as long as the war unleashed by Russia continues.

He said this during a meeting with Ukrainian journalists in Kyiv on Monday, July 15.

Speaking about the results of last week’s NATO summit in Washington, Zelenskyy noted that “Ukraine got the maximum it could get.”

“We did not receive at this summit what Ukraine cannot receive if it is in a state of war... Ukraine will receive an invitation to NATO and membership quickly as soon as the war ends. Partner countries cannot give an invitation to our state in full if it in a state of war," the president said.

He also recalled that an invitation requires a consolidated decision of all NATO members.
