The European Union will be able to supply more electricity to Ukraine, - Ministry of Energy
From December 1, the maximum import capacity of electricity from the EU to Ukraine will increase to 2.1 GW, which will ensure energy supply stability during the winter. An additional 250 MW for emergency assistance from the EU will provide operational support in case of critical needs.
This was reported by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine. This decision was agreed upon during a meeting between the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Kyiv, as well as in consultations between the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the European Commission.
The Ukrainian energy infrastructure has been experiencing systemic damage due to Russian attacks since the start of the war, leading to regular power outages and energy shortages during peak winter periods. Increasing the capacity for electricity imports from the EU will enhance the system’s resilience under extreme loads. The Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Herman Halushchenko, noted that additional volumes of electricity will help increase the stability of power supply and better prepare the energy system for possible winter challenges.
The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) has confirmed the readiness of European countries to increase the capacity for electricity exports to Ukraine and Moldova. The EU not only provides commercial capacity but also guarantees Ukraine 250 MW of additional capacity for emergency assistance. In crisis situations, this will provide Ukraine with the necessary energy reserve that can be mobilized to promptly address supply issues.
As stated by the press service of the Ministry of Energy, starting from March 2025, European operators plan to review the transmission capacity limits for electricity exports from the EU to Ukraine and Moldova monthly and adapt the import volumes according to the needs of these countries. This will allow for a quicker response to any critical situations related to energy supply.
The European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and representatives of ENTSO-E are making efforts for the rapid adoption and implementation of decisions that will contribute to Ukraine’s energy security. "European partners are demonstrating a consistent position in supporting the Ukrainian energy system, especially ahead of the winter period," Halushchenko emphasized.
