How "Shaheds" bypass Ukrainian air defence systems: in swarms of 20 drones

Recently, Russian forces have changed their tactics for using Shahed-136 drones in attacks on Ukraine, focusing on high-altitude routes and massive group attacks. This is done with the aim of exhausting Ukrainian air defences, forcing them to use expensive Western interceptor missiles.

This was reported by Defence Blog analysts, based on data from Ukrainian sources.

It is noted that the Russian Armed Forces launch attack drones in groups of 20 or more, which attack targets at altitudes of 2000–2500 meters. This takes them out of the range of most anti-aircraft systems, such as the ZU-23-2, or mobile air defense groups with heavy machine guns like the DShK or Browning M2. As they approach their targets, the drones start a steep dive, reaching speeds of up to 90 m/s — such a trajectory significantly complicates their interception.

At these altitudes, drones can only be hit by anti-aircraft systems such as the Gepard SPAAG or upgraded short-range air defense systems like the S-125, Strela-10, Osa, as well as Western equivalents, including the Crotale, L3Harris VAMPIRE, and others. According to the information from sources, Ukrainian forces are experiencing an acute shortage of such systems.

Additionally, there is concern about the emergence of reconnaissance modifications of "Shaheds" equipped with optical guidance systems. These are likely recording the results of strikes and may adjust subsequent attacks, including potential targeting of emergency services arriving at the sites of previous explosions.

The authors of the material emphasize that despite the high effectiveness of IRIS-T and Patriot anti-aircraft complexes against missile threats, the use of a large number of cheap drones creates a significant burden on air defenses. For example, one "Shahed" costs many times less than the missile used to destroy it, which makes Russia’s strategy not only tactically but also economically justified.

Under such conditions, Ukraine is increasing diplomatic pressure on allies, requesting additional supplies of interceptors and specialized counter-drone systems. Such support becomes critically important for protecting civilians and infrastructure, the analysts stressed.
