Drones carried out an attack on a chemical plant in Yelets, Russia

During the night of May 23, powerful explosions occurred in several regions of the Russian Federation. In the Lipetsk region, there are reports of a drone attack on the chemical plant "Energiya."

In the city of Yelets, Lipetsk region, a large fire broke out at the "Energiya" enterprise following a drone attack. The enterprise specializes in the production of chemical power sources for aviation, the fleet, and unmanned aerial vehicles. According to official data, at least eight people were injured, and residents of nearby buildings were evacuated.

Governor Igor Artamonov stated that air defense and electronic warfare systems were active over the city, but debris from the drones fell on the plant’s territory, causing the fire. Some debris also hit the roof of a residential building. Eight people were injured, but there were no fatalities.

Footage of the attack and fire has appeared online. Local authorities warned of possible temporary disruptions to mobile internet in the city to ensure counteractions against further strikes.

Social media users note that the "Energiya" plant is one of the largest Russian producers of chemical power sources. In 2021, the enterprise launched a line for the production of lithium-ion batteries that can be used in drones, among other things. In 2024, it significantly increased its production volume both for state defense orders and the civilian sector. The enterprise is under US and EU sanctions.
