The Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klychko expressed sharp criticism towards the central government, accusing it of undermining democracy under the guise of war.

In an interview with The Times, Klychko noted: «This is the destruction of democratic principles and institutions under the cover of war. Once I said that there is a feeling of authoritarianism in our country. Now, this feeling has only intensified».

As Klychko noted, many Ukrainian mayors are under pressure, but his fame provides him with some protection: «Many mayors are intimidated, but my fame is my protection. You can remove the mayor of Chernihiv, but it is very difficult to remove the mayor of the capital, who is known worldwide», Klitschko stated.
