Nawrocki declared to Zelenskyy about the need to resolve "long-standing historical issues"

The newly elected President of Poland Nawrocki responded to Zelenskyy’s congratulations on his election victory and emphasized the importance of addressing "long-overdue historical issues."

"I look forward to continuing the cooperation between our countries, based on mutual respect and understanding. I am confident that this requires not only constructive negotiations but also the resolution of historical issues that demand our attention. Poland is Ukraine’s most steadfast supporter in confronting Russian aggression, and no other country understands this threat as well as we do. I hope that with joint efforts, we can work towards the common good, addressing unresolved issues of the past and creating a secure future together," wrote Nawrocki.

By the expressions "long-overdue" and "unresolved" historical issues, Nawrocki likely refers to the Volyn tragedy of 1943-44, which in Poland is considered a genocide of the Polish people committed by OUN-UPA forces.

Nawrocki repeatedly touched upon this topic during his election campaign.

"Today I cannot envision Ukraine in any structures - neither in the European Union nor in NATO - until such critical civilizational issues for Poles as the Volyn massacre are resolved. It is important to address the issue of exhumation of its victims in Ukraine. The tragic events in Volyn and the eastern part of Lesser Poland are our shared national trauma. A trauma which, unfortunately, remains misunderstood by the Ukrainian people and the President of Ukraine Zelenskyy," Nawrocki noted.
