Ukraine will win sooner than you think, - analyst
Russia’s war against Ukraine may end sooner than many think, and it will be Ukraine, supported by the democratic community, that will achieve victory.
This opinion was expressed by John Kirton, head of the G7 research group at the University of Toronto, in an interview with "Ukrinform".
According to him, Russia has no chance of prolonged confrontation in the conflict with Ukraine, as it is weaker than the Soviet Union was during the war in Afghanistan, while Ukraine has significantly strengthened thanks to international support.
"The conflict will end sooner than many assume—with the victory of Ukraine and the democratic community. The USSR was defeated in Afghanistan in almost ten years. A much weaker Russia will not be able to hold on for so long against a much stronger Ukraine. There is no doubt about the balance of power. The only question is political will," emphasized Kirton.
The expert is confident that G7 countries will be united in their support for Ukraine despite internal challenges.
"The EU has just provided Ukraine with a new tranche despite budgetary challenges. New weapons are being supplied—even from partners who were previously reluctant to help. The shift in Germany’s policy under Chancellor Friedrich Merz shows that Europe has mobilized like never before—with the leadership of Britain, France, and Canada," he noted.
Nevertheless, Kirton expressed concern about the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump, noting that he has not yet expressed "anything unpleasant" regarding Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
It is already evident to many that significant changes have occurred on the international stage with the rise of Donald Trump to power in the USA.
Perhaps not everyone has realized the consequences and scale of these changes initiated by the most powerful state. Long-standing alliances, international laws, and norms are being disrupted. Especially challenging are the countries that are institutionally weak, internally or weakened by war, like Ukraine.
How can we survive under conditions where justice, responsibility, and values are sidelined, while resource and financial interests and short-term gains dominate? What can Ukraine offer the world to avoid begging and become a partner worth and beneficial to deal with?
