Zelenskyy appointed Shapovalov as the Commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces
President Zelenskyy appointed Hennadiy Shapovalov as the Commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
This was reported with reference to the decree published on the President’s Office website.
Prior to this, Shapovalov held the position of Commander of the "South" Operational Command. He left this position in February 2025. In March 2022, he was awarded the rank of Brigadier General.
In January 2025, the President stated that he was appointing Shapovalov to work with partners in Wiesbaden and coordinate security assistance to Ukraine.
Background information: Hennadiy Shapovalov was born in 1978 in the Kirovohrad region. In 2000, he graduated with honors from the Institute of Tank Troops at Kharkiv State Polytechnic University, and in 2012, also with honors, he graduated from the Command and Staff Institute for the Employment of Troops (Forces) at the National Defence University of Ukraine.
He progressed through his military career from a tank platoon commander to the commander of the separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakov Handzyuk, and in March 2022, he was awarded the rank of Brigadier General.
