Power outages pose a threat of hepatitis, cholera and botulism in Ukraine
This was stated by Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko.
When the water is turned off along with the electricity for a long period of time, the threat of transmission of infections through it increases sharply.
“The threat is those infectious diseases that can be transmitted if banal hygiene standards are not observed. When fruits are not washed, hands are not washed, or anything else is not washed. These are hepatitis, and the same cholera. This is botulism - there is no electricity, storage conditions are violated. All this can lead to infectious diseases or food poisoning,” Lyashko said.
According to him, now the situation is “no less critical” than when the Kakhovka dam was blown up a year ago.
Outbreaks of hepatitis A due to water have already been recorded this year. Therefore, epidemiological monitoring has been strengthened, “we identify all cases of diarrhea and other things, we look at the symptoms.”
