"The end of the war is closer than it seems,’" - Zelenskyy

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed the opinion that the war with Russia is "closer to an end" than many believe and urged allies to support the Ukrainian army.

He stated this in an interview with ABC News.

"The plan for victory is to strengthen Ukraine. That’s why we ask our friends, our allies to help us. It is extremely important," – Zelenskyy noted during an interview with "Good Morning America" host Robin Roberts.

"I believe that we are closer to peace than it appears. We are closer to the end of the war," – he added.

Zelenskyy spoke with ABC News during his visit to New York on Monday for the United Nations General Assembly this week as part of a trip to the USA, where he promised to present his "victory plan" to President Joe Biden and other key American political figures.

Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed to the United States and the United Kingdom to lift restrictions on long-range missiles they have provided to Ukraine for hitting targets deep inside Russia.

Zelenskyy’s request came amid fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine and a few weeks after Ukraine’s operation in the Kursk region began.

Zelenskyy noted that Putin "fears" the operation in the Kursk region.

"It’s true. He is very afraid. Why? Because his people realized that he cannot protect – that he cannot cover his entire territory," – he said.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that only from a "strong position" can Ukraine "push Putin to end the war."

His wife, First Lady Olena Zelenska, was present during the interview with Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy is expected to visit Washington this week, where he will meet with Biden as well as presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
