The Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary will be headed by a "professor from the trenches"

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed a new ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary. The position has been filled by a Ukrainian volunteer from Zakarpattia, Fedir Shandor.

This was reported with reference to the president’s decree №876.

Fedir Shandor is a Ukrainian of Hungarian descent, originally from Zakarpattia region. He voluntarily went to the front in February 2023 as a soldier of the 101st Zakarpattia Brigade of Territorial Defence.

Fedir Shandor is also a professor at Uzhhorod National University. He is referred to online as the "professor from the trenches." Back in 2022, footage appeared online showing Shandor giving lectures to his students directly from the trenches during breaks between combat duties.

The position of the ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary had been vacant since July 2022 amid complex relations between the states. In July 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Lyudmyla Nepop from this position.
