In Ukraine, the civil status acts registry was restored after a large-scale cyber attack
The Ministry of Justice reported the full restoration of the civil status act registry, which was affected by a cyberattack. Information about all marriages, divorces, births, and deaths that were recorded in paper form during the registry’s downtime is now being entered into the database.
The attack that took place on December 20 paralyzed the system’s operation for several days. The first registries began to be restored 10 days after the incident, but full-fledged operation was only achieved now.
It is known that this was one of the largest-scale cyberattacks on Ukraine’s state services in recent years. The Ministry of Digital Transformation, together with the National Police and cybersecurity experts, is investigating the incident, including identifying the source of the attack and individuals who may be involved in it.
The restoration of the database is considered a critically important step for ensuring the functioning of state bodies, as well as for citizens who rely on these registries for processing documents and receiving services.
