State Customs Service refused to check the lifestyle of female officials from three customs offices

The State Customs Service of Ukraine will not verify the lifestyle of officials from the Chernivtsi, Odesa, and Kharkiv customs offices based on data published by journalists concerning their income and property. The official response from the customs service states that there are no sufficient grounds to conduct monitoring.

The State Customs Service of Ukraine, in its response to a journalistic inquiry, informed that it does not deem it necessary to monitor the lifestyle of customs officials, particularly Serafima Dumitru, Sofiya Krikunova, and Anna Asanova. These individuals became the subject of a media investigation published in the spring of 2024.

The response states that the Chernivtsi, Odesa, and Kharkiv customs offices sent letters to the anti-corruption body with the initiative to conduct lifestyle monitoring of these officials; however, according to the State Customs Service, no grounds for such a step were identified, particularly in light of Article 51-4 of the Law of Ukraine "On Prevention of Corruption."

It should be noted that after the publication of the materials, journalists contacted the executive authority with an inquiry about whether checks were conducted on the mentioned individuals. In response, they were informed that the customs offices had submitted requests for monitoring, but the lack of grounds for conducting it complicated the process.

The agency also noted that, according to approved orders, customs office employees must adhere to ethical standards and financial control requirements. However, discrepancies in the officials’ declarations, such as not mentioning the size of their salaries, became grounds for further investigation and inquiries from journalists.
