In the Verkhovna Rada, consultations have begun regarding the replacement of assistance from USAID
The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy has initiated consultations with European partners regarding the possibility of replacing American aid. This concerns projects that were funded by USAID.
This is reported in the statement of the Committee.
"At the parliamentary level, consultations with European colleagues regarding the possible replacement of American aid have already begun - at least until Washington makes final decisions," the committee’s statement says.
It is reported that the scale of problems faced by Ukraine and many other countries due to the cessation of American aid is significantly larger than it may seem at first glance.
"Ukrainian organizations and other entities that received grants from USAID did not have time to prepare for such abrupt changes. Of course, the American people and government have every right to verify the results of this aid and decide whether to continue their global support," the committee believes.
While this verification is underway, Ukraine must take urgent measures to avoid destabilization of key processes in the state. Further steps in this direction should also be anticipated.
Due to the pause in project funding, the normalization of processes related to aid might take three, four, five, or even six months.
"At a time when every voice is important, and cultural diplomacy and credible information are integral elements of Ukraine’s independence protection. In conditions of limited state funding, grant aid is sometimes the only option for the functioning of projects in the field of culture and media," the statement says.
The committee emphasized that USAID’s grant support has facilitated the implementation of cultural initiatives, job creation, and the development of Ukrainian media, which are still suffering from the advertising market crisis after the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation. With the agency’s support, projects providing psychological assistance to children and families affected by the war are also being implemented.
The statement emphasizes that USAID aid is crucial for Ukraine’s democratic development, especially in the current geopolitical conditions. The committee calls for the preservation of these programs and finding solutions for their funding to avoid destabilization in important areas.
