Police are investigating the circumstances: In Odesa region, a 16-year-old boy died from a gunshot wound

On the night of March 8, police in the Odesa region received a report of the death of a 16-year-old teenager from a gunshot wound. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers established that the deceased, along with a friend, went to a local quarry on the evening of March 7 to shoot a gun.

At a certain moment, the deceased’s friend was posing with the weapon for a photo and accidentally pulled the trigger: the bullet hit the other young man. Details of the tragedy were revealed by the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Odesa region.

The message stated that the report of the boy’s death was received on the emergency line 102 from a resident of one of the villages in the Podilsk community on the night of March 8.

"The investigative-operative group of the territorial police unit discovered the body of a young man with a gunshot wound to the chest near the settlement. Police preliminarily established that in the evening, two local 16-year-old boys went to the quarry to shoot a gun. There, during the photographing, the young man who was posing with the gun accidentally pulled the trigger, and a shot was fired. As a result, his friend received a gunshot wound and died," noted the regional police.

Currently, the body of the deceased has been sent by investigators for a forensic examination to ascertain the cause of death.

Information about the incident was entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Article 119, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (murder due to negligence).

As part of the criminal proceedings, a number of examinations have been appointed, including for the investigation of the seized weapon. Its origin is currently being clarified.

Procedural supervision of the case is being carried out by the Podilsk District Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation will establish all the circumstances of the tragedy.

"Police urge parents to monitor their children’s leisure activities, teach them the rules of handling dangerous items, and specifically explain: discovered weapons, ammunition, or explosive substances should not be touched and should be immediately reported to the emergency line of the National Police at number 102 or the State Emergency Service at number 101," emphasized the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Odesa region.
