Trump suggested that he may not be able to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia
U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that achieving a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia might be impossible due to the great hatred between the parties.
He stated this in an interview with NBC News.
When asked about Russia’s war and the Trump administration’s efforts to end it, Trump responded that there were moments when he came close to stepping away from the mediating role.
"Sometimes I (was) close to that, but good things happened," Trump said, explaining why he still hasn’t abandoned his "peace efforts."
At the same time, he confirmed that he could still do so. "Well, there will come a time when I will say, ’Okay, go ahead. Keep being foolish and keep fighting,’" Trump said.
He acknowledged that reaching an agreement between the two warring countries might be unrealistic, although he also noted that he believes the deal might be "quite close."
"Maybe it’s impossible… For you to understand, Kristen, between these two men (Zelenskyy and Putin. – Ed.), and also, quite frankly, between some of the soldiers, there’s a huge hatred. Between the generals. They’ve been brutally at war for three years. I think we have a very good chance of getting it," – said the U.S. president.
Trump also noted that there has been progress in the peace deal with one of the sides, but not the other, although he did not specify whether he was referring to Ukraine or Russia.
