Cardinal Robert Prevost from the USA has been elected as the new Pope.

He has become the first Pope from the United States of America.

The newly elected pontiff Robert took the papal name Leo XIV and will become the 267th Pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Thousands of believers who gathered at St. Peter’s Square welcomed the news of the new spiritual leader with loud applause.

Who is Robert Prevost, the new Pope: biography

Cardinal Prevost was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, USA. From 2001 to 2013, he led the Augustinian Order, and in 2014 he was appointed as the titular bishop of Sufar and the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru. He became the bishop of this diocese in September 2015. Later, he also served as administrator in Callao. In January 2023, Pope Francis appointed him as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and in September 2023, he was made a cardinal-deacon with the title of the church of Santa Monica.

Prevost actively worked within the structures of the Holy See: he was part of the Congregation for the Clergy and the Congregation for Bishops. In Peru, he was a member of the permanent council of the episcopate, chaired the commission on education and culture, and also collaborated with Caritas Peru.
