Talks between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia: the Turkish Foreign Minister called for peace
The first meeting in three years between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia has begun in Istanbul. Before the negotiations, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan delivered a welcoming speech, urging the parties to seize the opportunity and agree on peace.
«There are two paths: one leads us to peace, the other to even greater destruction. The parties themselves will decide which path to choose», Fidan stated, emphasizing the importance of this dialogue and the high cost of each missed opportunity to resolve the conflict.
According to him, Turkey sincerely believes that, with a constructive approach from both sides, these negotiations could lead to de-escalation and a peaceful resolution. Ankara continues to play the role of mediator and hopes for progress.
During the meeting, the delegations exchanged welcoming words, after which the representatives of the US and Turkey left the negotiating room, as was agreed in advance. The negotiations are being held in a closed format.
Media also report that the Ukrainian delegation is communicating with the Russians through an interpreter.
