Germany will soon supply Ukrainian defense forces with Skyranger-35 self-propelled anti-aircraft systems, which were specifically designed taking into account the experience of the war in Ukraine. The first batch, according to the manufacturer’s leadership, is expected this year, and these systems are intended to enhance the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ability to repel daily drone attacks.

Plans for the deliveries were mentioned in May, but specific details have only emerged now, reports the publication KP.UA.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger confirmed in an interview with ZDF that the first self-propelled units will arrive in Ukraine this year. Representatives of the company also stated that the contract is of significant value and involves substantial funding – the exact number of units is not disclosed for security reasons.

The British analytical company Janes notes that the Skyranger-35 technically surpasses the solutions currently available to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, such as the Gepard, primarily due to the integration of modern radars and an automated targeting system.

The system combines a rapid-fire 35-mm cannon, optical sensors, and an AESA radar with 360-degree coverage, enabling the detection and tracking of low-flying targets in dense combat conditions. And yes, it can operate almost autonomously – the operator only needs to confirm the launch or monitor the situation, with their involvement reduced to a minimum.

Technical specifications

The striking component of the Skyranger-35 is the 35-mm Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3, capable of firing up to 1000 rounds per minute and engaging targets at a range of up to 4 km. For striking small and maneuverable targets (drones and cruise missiles), Oerlikon AHEAD ammunition is used, containing dozens of tungsten sub-projectiles in each round – they detonate near the target, creating a dense "cloud" of damage, so a direct hit is not necessary.

The Oerlikon AMMR (AESA) radar provides 360-degree coverage and resistance to electromagnetic interference, while the Skymaster fire control system integrates data from radars and opto-electronics, enabling automated targeting. The Leopard-1 chassis provides the system with good mobility and rapid deployment in the field.
