Ukraine has increased its gas reserves, the share of potentially Russian imports has decreased to 57%
In September, Ukraine imported 709 million cubic meters of natural gas, of which 406 million were potentially Russian gas from Hungary and Slovakia.
The share of potentially Russian gas decreased to 57.3% in September, although in previous months it consistently accounted for over 70% of total imports.
As of October 1, gas reserves in Ukrainian underground storage facilities amounted to 12.86 billion cubic meters, of which free gas accounted for 8.135 billion cubic meters.
Last year, the reserves were 12.4 (7.7) billion cubic meters. This means more reserves have been accumulated this year.
However, unlike last year, there is active gas consumption in the agricultural processing sector in Ukraine (elevators, grain drying), which traditionally amounts to 250–350 million cubic meters per season. Last year, due to an extremely dry autumn, this consumption was practically absent.
Thus, it can be said that gas reserves in 2025 generally correspond to last year’s levels.
It is worth reminding that due to a deficit, Ukraine started emergency gas imports from the EU in February-March, meaning last year’s reserves were insufficient for the country.
Experts expect a similar situation in the next heating season.
