The SSU uses double agents to expose FSB saboteurs on the territory of Ukraine
The SSU uses double agents to identify collaborators and prevent sabotage on Ukrainian-controlled territory.
This is reported by The Telegraph.
The scheme is simple: Ukrainian agents contact the FSB, agree to “work” with them—and lead the Russians to failure.
The story of Andriy is an example of such work. He operates almost on a permanent basis: he responds to announcements in pro-Kremlin Telegram channels where the FSB seeks operatives for money. After receiving a task, Andriy pretends to carry it out—and helps the SSU track down real saboteurs.
For instance, on one occasion, under an FSB order, he made a bomb—actually a dummy—and hid it in an agreed location. Later, an FSB “underground operative” picked up the device and moved it to a crowded place to detonate it. At that moment, Ukrainian special services, whom Andriy had warned in advance, apprehended the operative.
According to The Telegraph, Russia is trying to create the illusion that there is an internal anti-government underground in Ukraine. To achieve this, the FSB hires people willing to carry out sabotage for money. Ukrainian double agents strive to be the first to respond to such offers in order to “guide” the operatives and lead the SSU to the real organizers.
Andriy admits that the FSB agents he interacted with are generally competent, but their perception of Ukraine is distorted.
“Sometimes I had the feeling that FSB officers form their ideas about the realities of our life here not based on deep research or intelligence, but as if they watched a low-budget action movie or news about Ukraine on Russian television,” he says.
