Until the end of martial law, Zelenskyy remains President of Ukraine, - head of the Verkhovna Rada

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk responded to Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin that Volodymyr Zelenskyy will remain President of Ukraine until the end of martial law.

Stefanchuk writes about this on social networks.

Thus, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada responded to Putin’s statement that since Zelenskyy’s 5-year term of office has ended and new elections are not being held, the authorities in Ukraine should supposedly pass into the hands of the parliament and its speaker. As evidence, he cited the distorted content of one of the articles of the Ukrainian Constitution.

“It is very good that Russia has begun to read the Constitution of Ukraine. I would recommend that inquisitive readers master the text of our Constitution not selectively and pay attention to Part 1 of Article 108: “The President of Ukraine shall exercise his powers until the newly elected President of Ukraine assumes the post.” In democratic societies this is called continuity of power. But this “continuity” is not in the Russian sense (as in “eternity”), but in the normal, democratic and safe sense.

Therefore, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is and will remain the President of Ukraine until the end of the martial law. And all this is in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Ukraine."

The Chairman of the Rada noted that such Russian narratives are predictable and meaningless. But he is confused by something else - that “individual “Ukrainian” politicians, as if preparing the ground, quote the narratives expressed almost word for word, in particular, within the walls of the Ukrainian parliament.”

“And finally, as our Taras said: “Learn from others and do not shy away from your own!”

Therefore, it would be very good if, in addition to the Constitution of Ukraine, Russia began to read its own “Constitution”. And we are not talking about some principles of a democratic system or human and civil rights that are illusory for Russia. And at least in the part where it is said that the Russian Federation is taking measures to maintain and strengthen international peace and security, to ensure the peaceful coexistence of states and peoples. To avoid scrolling too far, this is Article 79.1.”
