The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) have advanced in the Kursk region of Russia to a depth of enemy defense of 28 to 35 km. The Ukrainian army controls 93 settlements.

This was stated on Tuesday, August 20, by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi during the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, joining the event via video link.

According to Syrskyi, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are conducting an offensive defense in the Kursk direction.

"During the offensive in the Kursk region, the Armed Forces advanced to a depth of enemy defence from 28 to 35 km," he said.

The commander-in-chief added that the purpose of these actions is to create a security zone and stop shelling from the territory of the Russian Federation of civilian objects in the Sumy region, as well as to get ahead of the enemy.

"The enemy is conducting a maneuverable defense, trying to prevent further advancement of the Defence Forces units deep into Russian territory, building up its groups and moving troops in other directions," Syrskyi added.

He stressed that further actions of the Ukrainian army in Kursk region will depend on the development of the operational situation.
