80% of guardians in Ukraine are men liable for military service, - media

In Ukraine, the number of cases of recognizing individuals as incompetent and appointing guardians for them is growing at an unprecedented rate.

According to data from the Register of Court Decisions, the monthly number of appeals to Themis on such cases in 2024 exceeded 700 proceedings. This is more than twice as many as before the war.

In 90% of cases, courts recognize individuals as incompetent, establish guardianship over them, and appoint trustees. The latter have become the subject of media analysis.

One of the possible reasons for the sharp increase in the number of such cases is the war and the associated socio-economic difficulties, physical and psychological trauma, due to which citizens may be recognized as incompetent. However, there is reason to believe that this is far from the only or even fundamental factor.
