The weekly expenses of the Russian budget for the war in Ukraine reach 210 billion rubles. This amount exceeds the annual budgets of 80% of the country’s regions, some of which have annual budgets even smaller than the daily military expenses.

This was reported by The Moscow Times. The publication notes that 64 out of 83 Russian regions have budgets smaller than the weekly military expenses.

At the end of September, the Russian government published a draft budget for 2025 with record military expenses totaling 13.2 trillion rubles (approximately 136 billion dollars). This amounts to 38 billion rubles per day.

This year, the Russian budget expenses for the army and security forces amounted to 11.1 trillion rubles, or about 210 billion rubles per week, which exceeds the annual budgets of 80% of Russian regions.

Only 18 out of 83 subjects of the Russian Federation have annual budgets that exceed the weekly military expenses. These include Moscow, Saint Petersburg, as well as Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Kemerovo, Chelyabinsk regions, and other industrially developed regions.

In contrast, 64 regions have budgets smaller than the weekly military expenses. Moreover, almost a quarter of them have an annual budget that is less than one-third of the weekly war expenses. Among the most vulnerable regions are the national republics - Kabardino-Balkaria, Tuva, Mari El, North Ossetia, Kalmykia, Karachay-Cherkessia, Mordovia, Khakassia, Altai, as well as Tambov, Kostroma, Oryol, Novgorod, Pskov regions.

And that’s not all. Four regions – the Jewish Autonomous Region, Ingushetia, Kalmykia, and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug – have annual budgets smaller than Russia’s daily military expenses. The smallest annual budget is that of the Jewish Autonomous Region, amounting to 15.3 billion rubles.
